1 cup Swift'ning.
2 1/2 cups sifted flour.
1 cup brown sugar.
1 teaspoon soda.
1/2 cup water 1 teaspoon salt 2 1/2 cups rolled oats.
Cream Swift'ning and sugar. Add water and rolled oats. Mix well. Sift flour with soda and salt. Add to mixture. Divide the dough in half. Pat to fit a 11 1/2x 17 1/2-inch cookie pan (with shallow sides). Spread with date filling. Pat out remaining dough between two sheets of waxed paper to fit size of the pan. Remove one sheet of waxed paper and lay dough over filling. Remove top sheet of waxed paper. Bake. Cool. Cut into rectangles, 1x2 inches.
Cook together until thick: 1 pound pitted dates 1 cup sugar.
1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/2 cup water.
Cool before spreading on dough.
350° F.
About 30 minutes.
