In the niche at the foot of the stairway stands a marble statue of Thomas Jefferson, for which the government paid $10,000. This sum was a part of an appropriation made by the act of March 3, 1855, authorizing the President to contract with Hiram Powers for some work of art to adorn the Capitol.
