Ortho-vanadates are prepared by fusing vanadium pentoxide with the required amount of a carbonate; on addition of nitric acid to one of its salts, metavanadic acid separates out as a brown-red powder ; on ignition, a sparingly soluble red powder is left: 2HVO3 = H9O + V2O5. Ortho-antimonates are unknown.
